The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) signed a memorandum of understanding with Bangkok Bank and Advanced Wireless Network (AWN), a subsidiary of Advanced Info Service (AIS), for development of a mobile ID application, the electronic identity verification system running on QR code.
The move facilitates AIS customers using QR code provided by AWN to open a new savings account.
The mobile ID app enables users to open a bank account without using their integrated circuit card.
The process is in the development stage, and a trial service is scheduled to launch to AIS subscribers in June this year.
Takorn Tantasith, director-general of the NBTC, expects to see more collaboration between other mobile operators and banks on the same development, paving the way to promote the government's national digital ID system.
The NBTC is on the verge of discussions with the Bank of Thailand on defining the standards for identity verification through QR code, in line with the upcoming e-commerce law that is expected to be implemented soon.
