The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has ordered a number of businesses and expatriates to comply with the Telecommunications Regulatory Act, and its associated regulations and decisions after they were found to be breaching the regulations.
As part of its role as a supervisory body over the provision of telecommunication services, TRA recently conducted an inspection campaign and its team of officials with judicial powers identified a number of expatriate workers providing telecommunication services that are not licensed by it. The breach of the law was identified to be done through software installed in mobile phones and computers, and via selling unlicensed international calling cards. The provision of telecommunication services without a licence is deemed illegal, and constitutes a breach of the Telecommunications Regulatory Act.
The inspection team has found some of the dealers selling telecom devices that were not types approved by TRA. Accordingly, the necessary inspection and seizure reports were issued to the offenders and the inspection team drew the attention of these establishments to comply with the Telecommunications Regulatory Act, and the decisions implementing its provisions. The team also emphasised the importance of obtaining approval for telecom devices from TRA before trading them.
Violations can be reported by calling TRA’s Call Centre on its toll free number 80000000.
