Deutsche Telekom starts FTTH roll-out in Bautzen

Deutsche Telekom announced the start of one of the biggest publicly funded fibre network projects in Germany. Nearly 56,000 households and businesses in 55 municipalities in the Bautzen district will be connected to gigabit fibre broadband, with the help of EUR 70 million of support from the federal government and EUR 24 million from the Saxony state government. The first services should start in the second half of 2019, and the roll-out will be completed by the end of 2020.

Telekom was awarded the contract for the project and said it will deploy around 4,000 km of fibre, 1,500 km of underground ducts and more than 1,100 new cabinets for the FTTH network. Residents need to contact the operator to activate the services, and building owners will be informed about the free connections.
