Movistar Argentina launches pay-TV in Buenos Aires

Movistar Argentina launched its long-awaited pay-TV service in Buenos Aires on 22nd October. The IPTVservice has initially been made available to the 1.5 million homes passed by the telco’s fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network but is restricted to users who subscribe to one of Movistar’s multi-play bundles. The premium ‘Fibra con TV 300 Megas’ package is priced at ARS2,057 (USD56.4) per month, and includes 90 TV channels, alongside unlimited fixed voice calls and symmetrical broadband speeds.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, in January 2018 Movistar was granted a ‘Registro de Cable’ (Cable Registration) licence by the National Entity for Communications (Ente Nacional de Comunicaciones, ENACOM). The concession covers Buenos Aires, Godoy Cruz, Guaymayen, Lujan de Cuyo and Mendoza.

On 3 April 2018 Spanish parent company Telefonica unified its Argentinian branding, preserving the Movistar (mobile) name, and abandoning the Speedy (broadband) and Telefonica de Argentina (wireline) brands.
