Hawaiki Submarine Cable contracted Ciena to upgrade the capacity of its recently launched subsea cable connecting New Zealand and Australia with the west coast of the US.
The company selected Ciena's GoMesh Extreme solution to increase the cable's total capacity by 53% to 67Tbps, up from the design capacity of 43.8Tbps at the time of its launch in July.
The 15,000km Hawaiki cable spans from Mangawhai in New Zealand to Oregon on the west coast of the US, via Sydney Australia and Hawaii.
The cable also has a branching unit to American Samoa and will have the option to enable future connection to other South Pacific islands, including Tonga, Fiji and New Caledonia.
Hawaiki has been optimized to support coherent wavelength technology, and upgrading with Ciena's GeoMesh will lower cost per transported bit as well as enabling speed upgrades.
“As the provider of the largest and fastest link between Australia, New Zealand, and the US, we recognize our customers’ need for innovative capacity solutions that support a shorter time-to-market and improved revenue generation,” Hawaiki Submarine Cable CEO Remi Galasso said.
“Our collaboration with Ciena will allow us to both scale our infrastructure with minimal operational complications and meet market requirements for greater connectivity and diversity across the Pacific.”
