Claro and Vivo led the growth of the 4G market in Brazil in the first half of 2018, with net additions of 4.5 million 4G mobile phones. Vivo advanced the most in migrating customers to 4G, reaching 58 percent of its base, and the four other major operators ended the first half with more than 50 percent of their mobile base on 4G.
Vivo accounted for 32.9 percent of 4G users in Brazil, followed by TIM (26.5%), Claro (23.1%) and Oi (16.5%). By the end of H1, 4G handsets were already used by more people than the combined total of 3G and 2G technology.
In June, 4G was available in 4,071 municipalities and for 94.2 percent of the Brazilian population. TIM was the leader in the number of municipalities and population served, followed by Vivo. Oi was further behind in the roll-out, with its 4G network still limited to 834 municipalities.
