Spanish alternative operator Grupo MASMOVIL has announced the acquisition of a 40MHz block of spectrum in the 3400MHz-3800MHz (‘3.5GHz’) band from domestic ISP Eurona Wireless Telecom. MASMOVIL will pay EUR30 million (USD34.9 million) for the frequencies, which it says will support its future introduction of 5G technology.
As previously reported by TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, last month MASMOVIL acquired fixed-wireless operator Neutra Network Services for EUR15.5 million, inheriting a 40MHz block of nationwide spectrum in the 3.4GHz-3.6GHz band in the process.
Further, the telco is currently participating in the auction of 5G-suitable 3.6GHz-3.8GHz spectrum being held by the Ministry of Economy and Enterprise (Ministerio de Economia y Empresa, MINECO), although the back-to-back takeovers mean that its bidding power is likely to be restricted by government-stipulated spectrum caps.
