CFM supports call for speedy broadband at lower price

The Communications and Multimedia Consumer Forum of Malaysia (CFM) is supporting the government's push for half-priced broadband services at double the speed.

Chairman of CFM, Mohamad Yusrizal Yusoff, said in a statement: "The effort is good news for consumers as high-speed Internet is considered a modern necessity rather than a luxury."

"The government's effort to narrow the urban-rural digital divide can be considered a great achievement."

"The infrastructure had been built and used even in rural areas. By upgrading and optimising existing ones, communications service providers should be able to improve their coverage and reduce the rates."

He said the current need for digital connection saw customers with limited choice paying exorbitant rates for such services.

Online business activities also grew in tandem with the rise in Internet access.

"If the prices of Internet services are reduced, the cost of doing business would lessen. This would consequently improve the standard of living," said Mohamad Yusrizal.

He added that as a consumer forum for the communications and multimedia industry, CFM had always emphasised on self-regulation by encouraging consumers to choose packages that fit their budget.

"A high demand for lower price can influence the demand for the packages offered."
