Kolbi starts FTTH rollout work in Heredia

Costa Rican state-owned telco Kolbi – the telecom arm of utility firm Grupo Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (Grupo ICE) – is set to begin replacing existing copper access networks in the central district of Santa Barbara de Heredia with fibre-based infrastructure.

Kolbi has announced that it will spend USD530,000 on the installation of 50km of fibre in the district, providing up to 4,300 customer with download speeds of to 300Mbps.’ The rollout forms part of the operator’s network upgrade programme – Next Generation Access Network (Red de Acceso de Nueva Generacion, RANGE), which will see Kolbi replace legacy infrastructure with fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) systems in 66 locations by early 2020 – as well as its Transformation of Information and Communication Technologies of Heredia (TTH) project. A spokesperson for the company stated that the replacement work would be carried out in stages, the first of which would cover Zetillal and Barrio Jesus between April and June this year.
