Japan's KDDI has entered a partnership with Toyota and geology consulting services company OYO Corporation to develop an IoT-based disaster prevention and mitigation system.
The companies have agreed to develop and test a joint system with the aim of commercializing it next year.
The new system will combine KDDI's demographic movement data, probe data obtained through Toyota's connected car and data from OYO's disaster monitoring sensors with public information such as weather data, with the aim of generating disaster prevention information.
It will allow vehicles and smartphones to be used as mobile IoT sensors to complement data gathered through fixed sensors set up by the national and local governments. Analytics tools will be used to mine insights from this data.
Applications for the new system will include allowing local administrations to determine where passable roads are to assist with evacuations, or to monitor extensive infrastructure in real time both during disasters and normal operation.
The system will aim to improve the accuracy and speed of decision making in issuing evacuation warnings, regulating traffic and ensuring safety for local residents.
A concept demonstration of the new system will be held during the 16th ITS Asia-Pacific Forum in Fukuoka City next month.
