Kyivstar launches 4G service in 2600 MHz band

Ukraine’s largest mobile operator by subscribers Kyivstar launched commercial 4G LTE services in the 2600MHz frequency range on 6 April in 20 cities/settlements, following similar launches from rivals Lifecell and Vodafone Ukraine on 30 March. On its website, Kyivstar disclosed that it deployed more than 500 additional base stations for operation in the 2600MHz range, whilst claiming an initial maximum theoretical LTE top data speed of 300Mbps. 4G services are provided to all subscribers with compatible devices without any additional fees under current tariff plans.

Kyivstar’s press release added that once it adds 1800MHz LTE services in the summer (expected in early July) maximum peak speed will be boosted to 700Mbps. The cellco also noted that from 11 April the process of 1800MHz spectrum exchange and harmonisation involving Kyivstar, Lifecell and Vodafone will commence in cities across the country (involving some temporary service shutdowns which will be carried out at night).
