ICE lines up fiber expansion

Fixed line incumbent Kolbi – the telecoms brand of state-owned utility firm Grupo Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (Grupo ICE) – has announced plans to roll out fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) to 66 locations over the next 24 months as part of its Next Generation Access Network (Red de Acceso de Nueva Generacion, RANGE) programme, which looks to gradually upgrade its network infrastructure to fibre.

The first cantons to be covered by the network will be San Ramon, Palmares and Atenas, the operator announced in a press release, and will be followed soon afterwards by Nicoya, Liberia, Golfito, Palmar Norte, Buenos Aires and Playas del Coco. Once the systems are live, customers in the aforementioned areas will have access to download speeds of up to 100Mbps. Kolbi claims to have rolled out 7,377km of fibre to-date, including three 100% fibre cities, namely: Barva de Heredia, Mal Pais and Quepos-Manuel Antonio.
