Huawei aims for bigger role in 5G in Bahrain

Huawei Bahrain hopes to play a key role in the future roll-out of 5G networks in Bahrain, having achieved a speed of three Gbps in the most recent tech trial in Italy.

The company’s newly appointed chief executive Luyuedong John told the GDN yesterday that 5G technology was a key focus area of the global ICT major’s research and development efforts along with automation and artificial intelligence technologies.

Mr John was speaking on the sidelines of MEET ICT Information and Communication Technology Conference and the Bahrain International Technology Exhibition (Bitex) at the Gulf Hotel Convention and Spa.

Huawei is working on a full range of 5G equipment, including wireless access networks, bearer networks, core networks, and devices, which it hopes to make available commercially shortly, he said.

According to him, the company last year expanded its operation in Bahrain three-fold and its 14-year presence in the kingdom reaffirmed Huawei’s commitment to the region and its growing presence in Bahrain, particularly in the enterprise technology market.

Huawei is a key partner of both the public and private sector organisations including the iGA, Bahrain Airport Company, Batelco and Viva Bahrain as it helps drive the country’s digital transformation and ICT development, said Mr John.

“We’re glad to leverage our ICT knowledge, comprehensive technical expertise and continuous innovations, aimed at building open, resilient and secure platforms in Bahrain’s enterprise market.”

As the exclusive Digital Transformation Partner of MEET ICT and Bitex 2018, Huawei is showcasing Safe City solutions in partnership with global security specialists to provide end-to-end public safety solutions.

These solutions provide convergent command and visualised dispatching to improve emergency response time, said Mr John.

Cloud platforms and intelligent analytics combine to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of law enforcement, and ensure a safe environment for the public, he said.

“Huawei is showing how cities use new ICT to sense, analyse and converge key data from city operations and management systems, so that managers can intelligently respond to a variety of governance, livelihood, and business needs.”

The company is also demonstrating technology solutions for new construction and smart buildings projects.

“In a digital society where all things will be sensing, connected and intelligent, smart digital enterprises require a full-cloud network that is agile, intelligent, open and secure, which is what we offer through our full-cloud network solutions on Software Defined Networking and Data Centre,” said Mr John.

“Huawei firmly believes in human capital and the importance of equipping the next generation with the necessary training and skills to become future leaders.

“As an active and committed member of the local community, we are pleased to continue the Huawei Internship Programme, which aims to cultivate Bahraini undergraduates with on-the-job training that enables them to play an active role in the kingdom’s digital transformation,” he added.
