AT&T has confirmed that it has successfully trialled a 10Gbps XGS-PON virtualised network using Open Source Access Manager Hardware Abstraction (OSAM-HA) software in Atlanta and Dallas. The telco notes that XGS-PONis a fixed wavelength symmetrical 10Gbps passive optic network technology, and can help to virtualise access functions within the last mile of its network.
In these field trials, the XGS-PON system delivered multi-Gigabit internet traffic and provided a seamless AT&T ‘DirecTV NOW’ video experience to trial participants. AT&T used a virtualised Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) function to manage subscribers, and noted that GPON and XGS wavelengths can both exist across a single fibre interface.
