TV, video enhance digital revenue in Spain

Spain’s digital market invoiced nearly €10 billion during 2016, 4.8% more than 2015, according to the Observatorio Nacional de las Telecomunicaciones y de la Sociedad de la Información (ONTSI).

ONTSI’s Informe Anual del Sector de los Contenidos Digitales en España report reveals that TV and video production drove most of this investment.

Digital TV, split in two equal halves between free-to-air and pay-TV, invoiced €3.75 billion during 2016, while video and cinema production generated €2.93 billion. Together with digital advertising (€1.57 billion), the three industries gathered nearly 84% of total digital invoicing.

Regarding market trends, the report found that free-to-air (FTA) and DTT platforms are slightly down, while pay-TV options, particularly IPTV, are growing as revenue per user continues to increase.

Regarding over-the-top (OTT) players, the report doesn’t give specific figures, as 2016 was Netflix’s first whole year operating in Spain and its main competitors, HBO España, Amazon Prime Video and the latest to arrive, Sky, were not yet available.

However, the ONTSI analysis points out that a 20% year-on-year growth is expected for the OTT segment through to 2020. In fact, according to the latest data from the Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC), a quarter of Spanish homes are already using a subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service.
