Ericsson has announced it has achieved record 5G speeds of more than 20Gbps during a trial with Telecom Italia (TIM) at the Polytechnic University of Turin.
The demonstration in the 28-GHz millimeter wave (mmWave) band resulted in a download speed of 23.4Gbps.
The companies also used the trial to demonstrate virtual reality streaming over 5G by streaming an immersive real-time virtual tour of the historic Piazza Carlo Alberto from the Polytechnic University.
In March, TIM and Turin's municipal authority agreed to conduct the Turin 5G project, which aims to cover the city with 5G by 2020.
Ericsson and TIM also last year launched the 5G for Italy program, which aims to develop an open ecosystem in which to create innovative projects and services enabled by 5G.
Next year TIM and the Polytechnic University of Turin plan to collaborate on joint research activities in 5G development, the operator said.
