Australia-Singapore Cable lands in Indonesia

Australia's Vocus Communications has announced the launch of its Australia-Singapore Cable (ASC) in Indonesia, in conjunction with landing partner XL Axiata.

The ASC will be a 4,600km cable system linking Perth on the west coast of Australia to Singapore via Jakarta in Indonesia as well as Christmas Island.

The four fiber pair network will have an initial design capacity of 40Tbps using 100 100Gbps wavelengths per fiber pair. It is being delivered by .

As of last month the cable project was 57% complete, and is scheduled to reach the launch stage in July 2018. The cable will interconnect with Vocus' existing 21,000km fiber network.

“The ASC network has been designed specifically with Indonesia in mind, providing the geographic diversity required to support Indonesia’s critical information infrastructure,” Vocus Group chairman Vaughan Bowen said at the launch of the cable in Indonesia.

“Through Vocus’ transmission network and long-term capacity rights with trans-Pacific cable systems, the ASC will provide the missing link connecting Asian customers to global internet and cloud content located in the US via an alternative Great Southern Route. Indonesia is soon to be a key hub in the middle of these traffic flows, rather than an end-point of the region’s fiber optic networks.”
