Guyana launches broadband project

The Guyanese government has announced that it’s allocating some USD 38 million in funds to the first phase of the Smart Guyana broadband programme, reports the Guyana Chronicle, citing finance minister Winston Jordan. The funds will be used to upgrade the government’s LTE network and build data centres, outfit smart classrooms and e-libraries, launch new e-health solutions for remote health care services and increase CCTV coverage.

A further USD 17 million has been allocated to provide ICT services to remote communities via the deployment of around 200 e-government ICT hubs to 89,000 residents in 170 communities. Work on both project is set to commence in 2018, said Jordan.
