Pakistan: Approximately 75 percent of population in the Country has access to broadband Internet over mobile networks, official sources said on Tuesday.
Official sources said that the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications (MOIT) has facilitated deployment of more than 91,000 kilometers fiber optic to establish a robust national fiber optic backbone in the Country.
They said that the fiber optic has been deployed with the objective to provide access to IT particularly Internet to masses.
Sources said that the Ministry of IT & Telecommunication has taken several steps to enable access to high speed Internet in Pakistan, and some key steps included holding of three rounds spectrum auction for Next Generation Mobile Services (NGMS) 3G/4G by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to meet ever increasing demand for broadband connectivity since 2014.
They said that the ministry also released Telecom Policy 2015 which has resulted in increased commitment of operators to growth of Broadband services in the country.
Moreover, sources said that Universal Service Fund (USF) is being used to fund projects to provide broadband services to people in unserved/ underserved areas where there is no business case for operators.
Pakistan has international connectivity through seven under-sea fiber optic cables proving for international bandwidth needs.
