Proximus wins wholesale customer for new FTTH network

Telecoms provider edpnet has signed up to use Proximus’ emerging FTTH network in Belgium.

Edpnet provides VDSL-based broadband services, along with fixed and mobile telephony, to consumers and businesses.

The wholesale deal with Proximus, financial details of which were not disclosed, means edpnet can tap into a pure fibre network that is set to cover 85 percent of businesses and over 50 percent of households in Belgium.

Proximus announced plans last December to invest €3 billion on upgrading its broadband network over the next 10 years.

In its Q2 financial report, released in July, the operator said the construction of an FTTH network had begun in Brussels, Antwerp and Gent. It declined to specify the number of premises that the network covers.

Proximus already offers FTTH to some businesses and said edpnet will be able to access the network from today.

Proximus CEO Dominique Leroy said: “This commercial agreement with edpnet is reflecting that we actively engage with our wholesale customers to meet their evolving needs.

“We are confident that this partnership will help us further to bring fibre to as many businesses and citizens in Belgium.

“The opening of our networks to enable other companies to develop their own innovative services is an integral part of our long term strategy and this agreement will be crucial for the further development of our wholesale business.”

Philip Deutz, CEO of edpnet, added: “For an independent telecom provider like edpnet, a commercial bitstream offer for fibre, as proposed by Proximus, is the fastest and most efficient way to bring new products and services to our professional and residential customers, who all see their data traffic & digital services grow exponentially, mainly driven by cloud, video applications and IoT.”
