Telin Timor-Leste (Telkomcel), which is backed by Telekomunikasi Indonesia International (Telin), has launched 4G LTE technology using equipment supplied by Ericsson. Live trials were successfully carried out earlier this month and the network has been commercially launched today (28 September) to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Telkomcel’s operations in Timor-Leste. The 4G network utilises a virtual Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) along with Ericsson’s LTE RAN 17A radio system.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Telkomcel served 455,170 subscribers as of 30 June 2017, meaning it is the third-largest operator by subscribers. Viettel Timor-Leste (Telemor) switched on 4G in July 2017, following on from Timor Telecom’s June 2017 LTE launch.
