Peru to bring broadband to Amazon jungle areas

Peru's transport and communications ministry (MTC) is preparing three projects to bring high-speed broadband connectivity to the country’s isolated jungle areas that aren’t covered by the existing tender processes, reports business daily El Comercio. The first project aims to connect 168 localities in the Napo and Putumayo river basins with a wireless broadband service, the second to bring fibre services to Manseriche in Loreto and the third, called Isolated Areas/Jungle Area, to connect the departments of Ucayali, Madre de Dios, Loreto and two Amazonas districts. The rollout will be funded by the country’s Telecommunications Investment Fund (Fitel) and the aim is to complete the projects by 2021.

Peru's private investment promotion agency ProInversion has recently launched tenders to build seven other regional fibre-optic broadband networks to interconnect with the national Fibre Optic Backbone Network (RDFO), with eight regional projects awarded last year set to become operational in the final quarter of 2017.
