Chromecast dominates among EMEA video developers

The ‘Video Developer Report 2017′ claims that Apple TV is the second most popular device with developers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa with 27% adoption.

Meanwhile Amazon comes in third place in EMEA with 15% of the market, followed by Roku with 8% share.

Overall, Chromecast was found to dominate in EMEA, Asia Pacific and Latin America with 37%, 41% and 47% of each respective market. However it trailed in North America.

In the US and Canada, Apple TV was found to be the dominant OTT device amongst developers with 38% adoption. Roku follows closely behind with 35%.

Here Chromecast falls into third place with 31% while Amazon Fire devices were found to have the least traction in this region with 24%.

“When it comes to OTT devices like Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, Roku and AppleTV, we see notable regional differences,” according to the study.

“While Amazon Fire, Roku, Apple TV and Chromecast are all popular OTT streaming platforms in North America, Chromecast is the most popular OTT platform in Latin America. At the same time, Amazon Fire TV is not used much in LatAm and Roku has a low distribution in EMEA.”

Elsewhere the research said that Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) is currently the most popular streaming format among video developers, however 31% will look to use MPEG-DASH in the next twelve months.

Nearly all of the video developers surveyed said they use H.264/AVC codec at 95% adoption. However, the survey results also suggest an increased adoption of the H.265/HEVC video codec over the next year.

The study is based on a survey of 380 video developers in more than fifty countries and analyses what kinds of platforms and video infrastructure technologies developers are using to provide the best content experiences to consumers.
