Bolivia’s Entel plans fiber network across Peru

Last week, the Peruvian and Bolivian Governments were working on a bi-national agreement to strengthen connectivity services between the countries. These discussions have now led to an agreement that will enable Entel to become an operator in Peru.

According to the terms of the deal, Entel will focus on deploying a fibre network across Peru and into Bolivia that will connect the central South American country to the Pacific high-capacity, underwater fibre cable.

In May, Entel launched its first convergent offering through its recently-deployed fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network, which is only available in Bolivia’s main cities.

So far, the public telco has enabled 180,000 accesses across the country delivering IPTV, high-speed Internet and voice IP.

Millicom’s Tigo is the only other Bolivian telco delivering fibre-based services, which it has been doing since late 2015.

According to the latest reports, fibre technologies are poised for strong growth in Latin America in the coming years. By the end of Q1 2017, FTTH connections accounted for one in ten Internet accesses in the region.
