Canadian telecommunications company Videotron is partnering up with Comcast to launch an IPTV service based the latter’s Xfinity X1 platform.
The service will support a “peerless user experience” for Videotron customers, the companies say.
“We are very pleased with our decision to choose this state-of-the-art platform,” Videotron CEO Manon Brouillette comments. “Combined with the power of Videotron’s network and its rich array of content, it will enable us to continue offering our customers the best possible experience and will strengthen our technology leadership.”
In June, Comcast upgraded its X1 platform with features meant to enhance readability, reminders, and search capabilities. Back in April, a power-saving feature was added that enables customers to put their X1 boxes on standby to reduce usage.
“Xfinity X1 continues to be a game-changer, allowing millions of people to search and navigate live TV, on demand movies and shows, web video, apps, and more in a simple, fast, and intuitive way,” Tony Werner, president of technology and product for Comcast Cable, comments. “The platform has changed the experience of watching video and our partnership with Videotron will extend X1’s reach to even more users.”
As of the end of the second quarter this year, Videotron boasted 1.65 million cable TV customers, 1.62 million internet subscribers, and 337,6000 members for its OTT video service.
Videotron isn’t the only one utilizing Comcast’s X1 platform. In December, Canadian operator Rogers Communications said it would drop plans to develop its own IPTV system in favor of using X1. More on that here.
