MPT plans to provide free Wi-Fi services

State-owned telecommunication operator Myanmar Posts and Telecommunication (MPT) are arranging to give free Wi-Fi services in public areas starting in 2018, a senior company official said Thursday.

U Thein Hoke, deputy chief commercial officer of the MPT-KSGM joint operation’s commercial department, said they aim to give free Wi-Fi services in public parks and pagodas, with an upload speed of 1mbps and download speed of 2mbps.

‘’We are arranging to give Wi-Fi free services in public areas, such as Maha Bandula Park and Shwedagon Pagoda, starting in 2018,” U Thein Hoke told The Myanmar Times.

Now, 5BB Broadband Company (ISP provider) announced that they are giving Wi-Fi free service in 34 areas of Yangon in their official facebook page at July 7.

But Internet service providers should give stable Wi-Fi connections in free zones said U Zaw Zaw Myo Lwin, CEO of Yangon Heartz Media.

“We are welcoming the free Wi-Fi zones from communication operators and ISP companies. But they should give stable connection in these areas,” he said. “With stable connection, people can share information as well as upload and download smoothly.”

But U Zaw Zaw Myo Lwin said that people using free Wi-Fi services should be concerned about the network security

“According to the security and privacy warning, I should not access Wi-Fi free service because I have worry for my network security,’’ he said.

“I think that people use only social media in Wi-Fi free zones and shouldn’t use this for important transactions, such as mobile banking and online shopping,” said U Myo Myint Nyunt, general manager, of the sales and marketing department of 5BB Broadband company.
