PCCW Global, the international operating division of HKT, Hong Kong’s premier telecommunications service provider, is pleased to announce that, working in close collaboration with Cyber Games Arena (CGA) and Electronic Sports League (ESL), it delivered and sponsored resilient high speed and ultra-low latency connectivity for the recent “Return of the Legends” tournament, the latest iteration of the world’s most watched eSports game – League of Legends (LOL). PCCW Global’s resilient network also ensured that the online broadcast of the event was highly successful.
The live streaming of the two-day “Return of the Legends”, which relied on the high speed connections provided by PCCW Global, attracted around five million viewers online. The tournament was hosted by Hong Kong Tourism Board on August 4 and 6 and was part of the event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong SAR.
The “Return of the Legends” tournament also marked the first time ever in Hong Kong that so many former world champions had come together to compete in the world’s most watched eSports game, League of Legends (LOL). They formed four professional teams, representing Europe, North America, mainland China and Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau.
In 2016, PCCW Global provided resilient high speed and ultra-low latency connections for the League of Legends Master Series (LMS) Summer 2016 Grand Final in Hong Kong. This five-hour event was watched by over one million viewers online. Building on experience gained during that event, the PCCW Global team this year delivered a bespoke jitter-free and low latency connection with a 22ms roundtrip delay between Hong Kong and Taiwan where the nearest official LOL tournament servers are located.
PCCW Global also provided connectivity for live streaming services to mainland China and other countries around the world as part of the overall solution, together with on-site network infrastructure for the event’s “Festival Zone”, where fans were able to participate in numerous video games, including both mobile and virtual reality games.
CGA, one of the leading eSports-focused organizers based in Hong Kong, provided the necessary expertise and industry-specific knowledge that the Hong Kong Tourism Board needed in order to deliver a successful eSports event. CGA has hosted numerous gaming-focused events in Hong Kong and this event again shows its commitment and support for eSports and for the local gaming community.
Mr. Frederick Chui, Senior Vice President of Global Data Sales and Presales, PCCW
Global, said, “PCCW Global is proud to have once again been able to demonstrate our
support for the eSports industry by becoming the international connectivity sponsor of this
event, which continued our ongoing commitment to delivering the best possible gaming
experience for professional eSports players. This is just one of many worldwide events
which PCCW Global has provided connectivity solutions for over the past year.”
Mr. Kurt Li, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Cyber Games Arena, said, “We are
honored to have had the opportunity to participate in holding such a large-scale eSports
tournament in Hong Kong. Thanks to the support of the Government, PCCW Global’s
stable and high speed network, and ESL’s live production team support, we were able to
successfully run the event at a world-class level, while broadcasting it worldwide via the
Internet.”
CGA recently launched Hong Kong’s first eSports Bar with the aim of providing the gaming
community with a local base for sharing all things eSports related.
