More Glasgow neighborhoods set for superfast broadband

Thousands of Glasgow residents are set to benefit from a new ultrafast broadband network.

Openreach is rolling out a pilot scheme in a number of locations across the country later this year, including parts of Scotland's biggest city.

Parts of the city centre (classed as the Douglas exchange) and Bridgeton in the east end are among the 26 areas which will receive the latest G.fast technology.

Households will be able to access download speeds of up to 330 Mbps - which is ten times the UK average - meaning two hour HD films will be theirs in just 90 seconds while a 45 minute HD TV show will take just 16 seconds and a nine hour audio book will take three seconds.

The extra quick services have already started to go live in parts of Langside, Linn and Rutherglen.

Today's announcement brings the total number of UK premises able to take part in the early stages of the roll-out to more than 500,000, with more than one million expected to be reached by the end of the year.

Openreach aims to service a total of 10 million premises with the technology by 2020.

Andrew Hepburn, Openreach’s director for infrastructure delivery in Scotland, said: “This is great news for more parts of Glasgow. It’s a real coup for the city to be at the forefront of the rollout of ultrafast broadband.

"Now we’ve identified this latest group of pilot locations, engineering work will begin installing the new network. It will take a few months before people are able to use it.

“Developing the technology of the future is a key part of Openreach’s work.

"We’re the leading network provider in the UK and more than 26 million premises, using more than 580 service providers, depend on our network.

"More than nine out of ten homes and businesses already have access to superfast speeds. Faster speeds are more important than ever, and we’re sure our new ultrafast network will play an important part in the future success of the UK.”
