Telecom Fiji upgrading network

TELECOM Fiji Ltd (TFL) is building capacity and upgrading to achieve better speeds and performance using multiple access technologies, says company CEO Mothilal De Silva.

Speaking at their TFL annual awards night, Mr De Silva said they were using multiple access technologies such as ADSL, ultra-fast broadband services like VDSL, FTTH and GPOPN on fixed wireline and WiFi to cater for the different market segments.

"All these technologies are complementary solutions, not replacing one for the other," he said.

"Under fixed wireline network upgrades, we bring the mini exchanges and fibre closer to premises and nearly 70 per cent of populated areas have been upgraded to IP technologies progressively, dismantling the old TDM technology."

Mr De Silva also highlighted TFL's major transformation project this year to increase capacity of their satellite infrastructure to empower Fijians in far flung areas.

"This upgrade will enable programs such as distance learning, maritime safety and emergency services which are critical for our remote and rural communities," he added.

TFL is also further expanding its services and reach nationwide through several lucrative capital projects such as its fibre-optic cable projects which will see its reach high speed broadband expanding to more parts of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.
