Telenor to digitally empower farmers in six developing countries

Telenor has announced that GSMA’s mNutrition initiative empowered more than 5 million farmers in six developing countries, nearly 4 million of them in collaboration with Grameenphone and Telenor Pakistan. Launched in February 2014, the GSMA mNutrition initiative is a program supported by UK aid. It is designed to improve nutrition for underserved populations through mobile-based services that aim to change behaviours.

Six companies across Asia and Africa collaborated with GSMA Mobile for Development to launch and scale up the program in their respective countries, including Grameenphone and Telenor Pakistan, along with Airtel Malawi, Dialog Sri Lanka, Vodafone Ghana and Ooredoo Myanmar.

GSMA recently reported that 5.1 million agricultural value-added service (Agri VAS) users benefitted from the project as a result of the efforts conducted in 6 countries. Out of these, 760,000 are from Bangladesh using Grameenphone’s Krishi Sheba service and 2.9 million are active users of Khushhaal Zamindar service, created by Telenor Pakistan.
