Telenor Bulgaria plans LTE-A technology trials

Bulgarian telecoms operator Telenor (formerly GloBul) is reportedly trialling LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) technology using carrier aggregation (CA) in the 1800MHz and 2100MHz bands, domestic blog nexanbal.com writes. The company recently received additional frequencies in the 2100MHz band (2×15MHz), with the spectrum allocated by telecoms regulator the Communications Regulation Commission (CRC) for use from 26 March until 26 September.

TeleGeography notes that Telenor launched its 4G network using refarmed spectrum in the 1800MHz band in Sofia and a number of locations in southern Bulgaria in December 2015, with 57% of the population covered with LTE by year-end. Following the award of additional frequencies in the 1800MHz band in April 2016, the network was expanded to 75% of the population that month, whilst the cellco has since upped the maximum speeds it offers to 100Mbps.
