Vodacom gets LTE to 240Mbit/s

Vodacom said on Friday that it has achieved 4G/LTE speeds in excess of 240Mbit/s at a site in Pretoria.

Using so-called 4G+ technology, the mobile operator said it has achieved the speeds at the Brooklyn Mall, where it has refarmed spectrum, used “advanced” antenna technologies and optimised its network.

“With the recent launch of latest generation handsets, even higher speeds can be expected,” said Vodacom chief technology officer Andries Delport.

“The impressive speeds at this mall showcase the kind of super-fast connectivity that we can provide to South Africans, if we had access to spectrum. Access to additional spectrum would help us to do a lot more to extend coverage in the rural areas of South Africa,” Delport said in a statement.

He said over the past three years, Vodacom has invested R27,4bn in its network. If inflation is factored in, the company has invested R142bn in network infrastructure in South Africa since its inception in 1994.
