Cable operators welcome digitized cable TV in Nepal

Cable television operators have welcomed the government direction to switch to digital system within a year.

Speaking at a program in Kathmandu on Thursday, President of Federation of Nepal Cable Television Association, Sudhir Parajuli, said that the direction to the cable television operators to go digital by mid-April 2018 will be beneficial for the customers as well as service provider.

“The digital system will help to know the exact number of television users in the country. In the existing analog system, we cannot get the exact number of viewers as a line can be distributed to many users,” he said, adding: “Once we switch to digital system, every television set should be connected to a setup box which will help the service providers and the government to get the exact data.”

Recent census shows that there are more than six million cable television users in the country. But only around 2.5 million users have subscribed to cable television services, according to Khatri.
Few operators have already switched to digital system. The government had decided to digitize cable television system by making amendment to National Broadcasting Act 1993.
