Verizon and mobile association GSMA said today that they will partner on eUICC SIM cards for IoT security. The eUICC is a universal integrated circuit card, or SIM, designed to provide security for IoT devices. The partners are developing remote provisioning and management for the eUICC.
Verizon will serve as the GSMA-certified certificate issuer for remote provisioning and management of the eUICC for IoT devices, Verizon announced in a news release. GSMA has 800 mobile operator members and another 300 operators are part of the wider commercial GSMA ecosystem, the release notes.
The GSMA eUICC development partnership leverages Verizon’s IoT Security Credentialing Service and related initiatives. According to the program partners, Verizon’s GSMA certification will provide:
Application protection: an “over-the-top” (OTT) layer of security to help secure IoT devices and apps, regardless of provider.
Trusted authentication: ability to give select individuals and/or devices access to apps or IoT devices.
Data privacy: help entities keep their data secure through encryption.
“This is a promising step forward in securing IoT for the masses – the GSMA’s adoption of security certification through Verizon’s Security Credentialing Service will ensure standards for operators and manufacturers across the board, creating a more secure and consistent approach to IoT security moving forward,” Verizon VP of IoT Mark Bartolomeo was quoted.
The IoT security credentialing process will enable developers to secure points of IoT vulnerability individually, as well as to enhance protection of devices and applications regardless of service provider or transport mode – cellular, Wi-Fi, wireline, etc., Verizon elaborates.
