Hughes offers JUPITER LTE Acceleration Technology

Hughes Network Systems, LLC (Hughes), the global leader in broadband satellite solutions and services, today introduced its next evolution of JUPITER System technology which includes advanced LTE acceleration to support cellular backhaul requirements for mobile network operators and VSAT service providers as they expand their cellular services into areas without suitable terrestrial backhaul.

The Hughes HT2500 terminal, is a next-generation satellite terminal that has native support for accelerating LTE protocols. With support for over 7,500 simultaneous TCP sessions, the terminal is able to deliver accelerated performance for many devices connected simultaneously to the LTE eNodeB. Speeds of 200 Mbps enable the HT2500 to deliver the LTE performance required by mobile operators around the world.

Recognizing that satellite networks supporting cellular backhaul will often start out small and scale over time, Hughes is also introducing the HG220 gateway configuration to cost effectively address such small networks. The HG220 supports up to 5 networks over up to 5 satellites and with extensive QoS, IP features and bandwidth management options, the HG220 gateway and the HT2500 terminal provide an effective solution for satellite cellular backhaul links. The HT2500 and the HG220 utilize the JUPITER System's wideband DVB-S2X forward channel, the most efficient in the industry, with support for 5 percent channel roll off as well as 64APSK modulation.

Vinay Patel, manager of the cellular backhaul product line at Hughes, explained, "Our JUPITER System with LTE acceleration enables mobile operators worldwide to expand their networks with high-performance satellite backhaul links that are 40 to 60 percent more efficient than those previously available. This advanced technology builds on our broadband heritage around the globe and will continue to bridge the digital divide and improve economic and social development."

The JUPITER System with LTE Acceleration is proving to be the system of choice for satellite operators around the world. Entel Bolivia, a leading telecommunications provider in Bolivia, chose the JUPITER platform for its high-availability satellite broadband network. Entel is using the Hughes platform at over 500 deployed sites to extend cellular, including LTE access and Internet access, to remote areas of the country.

The HT2500 comes in a 1-rack unit package that is suitable for installation in an equipment rack similar to those found in cellular network environments. With the capability to support either 24 volt or 48 volt DC power, the HT2500 is well suited to be integrated into a remote cellular site. The initial release of the HT2500 supports return channel transmission of 8PSK up to 12 Msps thereby enabling the use of must faster return channels with additional enhancements to the return channel to be released later this year. The JUPITER LTE acceleration technology on the HT2500 as well as the HG220 gateway is available for delivery in Q2 2017.
