Manila government seeks public comments on national broadband project

The Department of Information and Communications Technology on Tuesday asked the public for suggestions on the proposed national broadband project, which was approved by President Rodrigo Duterte.

The P77-billion initiative, which will be separate from existing telecommunications networks, aims to improve internet speeds in the country and make government transactions faster and easier.

"We will invite the public to make constructive comments and inputs on our plan to help put up a better broadband network. Nothing will be hidden from the public," DICT Secretary Rodolfo Salalima said.

Submarine cables and satellite systems that will make up the network's backbone could be set up within a year, he said.

Duterte has promised to improve internet service in the Philippines, at one time threatening to open up the industry to more players unless local providers shape up.
