Bangladesh reduces mobile banking service charges

Mobile bank operators currently charge 2% for mobile banking transactions, which amounts to Tk20 from every transaction of Tk1000.

Bangladesh Bank has decided to reduce service charges on mobile banking, after deciding that clients were paying a disproportionate amount of money under the current rate.

BB spokesman Subhankara Saha declared the initiative to reduce mobile banking charges at Bangladesh Bank’s Jahangir Alam conference room on Monday.

He said that mobile bank operators currently charge 2% for mobile banking transactions, which amounts to Tk20 from every transaction of Tk1000. This was judged to be disproportionately high when compared to standard transactions.

Following discussions between Bangladesh Bank’s Board of Directors, authorities concerned were asked to reduce the service charges, he added.

“We have already seen some of irregularities in the news about the mobile banking system,” the spokesman said.

A total of 17 commercial banks are now providing mobile banking services to their clients, of which 16 banks have transferred funds to investment portfolios. This transfer is an irregularity, with Bkash of BRAC Bank the only one with clean hands in this regard, he pointed out.

Subhankara Saha further said that the Bangladesh Bank investigation team had already inspected 1000 mobile banking agents and found that some agents hold up to 100 SIM cards, which is illegal.
