Vodacom grows LTE population coverage to 70%

Vodacom has released its trading update for the quarter ended 31 December 2016, which shows that the company has significantly grown its LTE coverage.

The mobile operator spent R2.1 billion on its network in the last quarter, which helped it to increase LTE coverage from 54.1% to 70% over the past year.

Vodacom also extended high-speed transmission to 91.4% of its sites, which provides support for higher broadband speeds to consumers.

“As data demand continues to grow exponentially, we entered into a commercial agreement to roam on the newly-built data network of Wireless Business Solution (WBS) for additional capacity,” said Vodacom.

WBS is currently rolling out an LTE-A network and has signed an agreement with Vodacom to share aspects of its sites and facilities.

WBS said it will have at least 500 sites active on Vodacom’s network by March 2017, 2,000 by the end of 2017, and 5,000 by 2020.

WBS will also make use of its own sites, and sites of other telcos, to build its new LTE-A network.
