Telefónica boosts pay-TV footprint in Peru

Subscription figures have remained very stable between January to September 2016, according to the country’s telecom regulator, Osiptel.

By September, the market reached 1.75 million pay-TV households, 16,000 more than by the beginning of the year. The highest figures in the nine-month period were seen in June, totalling almost 1.78 million subscriptions.

Despite this stability, Telefónica managed to increase its footprint to reach a 67% market penetration by September through its two operations: Telefónica del Perú and Telefónica Multimedia.

Movistar, the commercial brand, ended the period with over 1.18 million subscribers, 60,000 more than in January 2016.

América Móvil’s Claro is the second largest pay-TV player in the country, but is far behind the market leader. The cable operator had 234,000 subscribers by September, 9,000 more than in January, closely followed by DirecTV with 223,000 subs (also up 9,000).

The Osiptel figures reinforce what previous reports have shown: despite being a market with low penetration (just over 22%), Peru has one of the highest concentration rates in Latin America.
