Openreach hails ultrafast broadband milestone

Openreach has hailed the connection of a business in Bristol to its latest Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.

The organisation, which is BT's infrastructure subsidiary, is aiming to deliver FTTP technology to a million small and medium-sized enterprises by the end of 2020.

This is part of a wider plan to offer ultrafast speeds to a total of 12 million homes and businesses within this timeframe.

The connection of Mathias and Sons marks the first stage in this process and means the company can now enjoy download speeds of up to 1Gbps - three times the top speeds that were previously available.

Clive Selley, Chief Executive of Openreach, commented: "This is an important milestone in our aim to make ultrafast broadband available to 12 million homes and businesses by the end of 2020.

"Some businesses have told us they want an alternative to dedicated lines and that is exactly what is being provided with this new product.

"We’ve committed to double our FTTP footprint this year and we have already begun this work in nine locations across the country.”

Jason Mathias, Chief Executive of Mathias and Sons, added that while the company's old internet speed had been serviceable, it was "clearly limited".

"Responsiveness is a cornerstone of the business that was being hindered by our internet speed," he said.

"Following the fibre installation from Openreach, we are now able to send designs and concepts to customers in seconds where it used to take ten minutes."

Mr Mathias described the FTTP connection as a step forward that makes the businesses more responsive, efficient and future-proof.

This latest development comes shortly after BT automatically upgraded 46,000 business fibre broadband customers to speeds of up to 76Mbps.

This is twice as fast as the 38Mbps speeds that they previously enjoyed and will be its new entry level standard for business fibre broadband.
