Anatel, Ipea to cooperate on broadband investment study

Brazil's National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) and the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea) have signed a technical cooperation agreement to work together on broadening access to broadband infrastructure in poor regions and improving economic and social indicators. Their joint studies will serve as a basis for the elaboration of public policies and will last one year.

According to the president of Ipea, Ernesto Lozardo, the support of the regulator will support policy on new investments in less developed cities. The agreement should provide the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications an independent and autonomous evaluation of the sector. For the Secretary of the Ministry, Andre Borges, the Ipea study will help ensure that investments by telecom operators are properly directed.
