UPC Poland considering FTTH partnerships for enhanced coverage

Cable TV and broadband provider UPC Poland is reportedly considering launching fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services via wholesale agreements with rival operators. According to local tech news portal Telko.in, the cableco has already carried out trials which would allow it to use other access networks under wholesale partnerships.

Although UPC is Poland’s largest cable provider by subscribers – and is looking to expand even further through its planned PLN3 billion (USD760 million) acquisition of rival firm Multimedia Polska which was announced last month – it is thought to be looking to use FTTH to target homes and businesses outside its own network footprint. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, at the end of June 2016 UPC passed 3.1 million homes, or around 20% of all households in Poland, serving 1.4 million unique customers who subscribed to 2.9 million separate services.
