Growth in Spanish FTTH subs indicates bright future for IPTV

In an increasing trend, Spaniards continue to choose fibre over ADSL, with fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) subscribers now having exceeded the four million barrier.

Figures from the Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC) say that during July 2016, over 110,000 homes subscribed to an FTTH service, while 101,000 stopped paying for an ADSL connection, and hybrid-fibre-coaxial (HFC) connections dropped by 8,000 units.

According to the report, 4.1 million out of the 13.4 million of active broadband connections are FTTH. And during the 12 months between July 2016 to July 2015, fibre technologies gained 1.8 million subscriptions while ADSL dropped 1.5 million.

Although the report shows general figures for the various technologies available in the country, an increasing adoption of IPTV services has been indicated through 2015 and 2016 along with the growing FTTH connections.

The strategies of the country’s telcos seem to point towards a future in which fibre connections become the norm. In fact, Telefónica announced last week its intentions to reach full FTTH coverage by 2020, and fibre-based products have shown to be working well for Vodafone-ONO and Orange-Jazztel as well.

Leading telco Telefónica is capitalising most from this growth, with the CNMC saying that it has 2.7 million households connected to its FTTH network.
