Mobile Internet users in China now number 710 million, according to iResearch data, with video streaming and listening to music listed as their favoured activities on the move.
On average, each user spent 112 minutes browsing the Internet with their smartphone every day, with an estimated 32% of online time spent on audio and video-related apps - according to the figures from July 2016.
Wechat (with 560 million users), QQ (490 million users) and iQIYI (330 million users) are the top three most-used apps in China, according to iResearch.
In the video streaming sector, Baidu subsidiary iQIYI remains the dominant player in both mobile and PC markets, with the latter showing a marked improvement.
“According to iResearch, iQIYI’s PC platform attracted 72.07 million active users daily. During the month of July, people watched a total of 2.3 billion hours of video programmes on iQIYI via personal computers, making the company a definite leader in this segment,” iQIYI said in a statement.
The news comes after iQIYI and Hong Kong broadcaster TVB signed a strategic cooperation agreement in August, to remake a series of TVB’s classic dramas.
August also saw a month-long marketing initiative by iQIYI which the company says saw more than 20 million fans taking part in online and offline activities including interactions with pop stars, lucky draws during the Rio Olympic Games and a members-only concert hosted in Beijing on 27 August.
