Verizon expands LATAM footprint eyeing regional OTT boom

Verizon has expanded its Latin American operation, targeting the increasing demand for connectivity for over-the-top (OTT) services.

This year, Verizon Digital Media has added six new points of presence (PoPs) in Colombia (in Medellín and Barranquilla), Brazil (Rio de Janeiro), Peru (Lima), and Argentina (two in Buenos Aires).

The addition of the PoPs improves Verizon’s content delivery network (CDN) performance on key measurements such as response time (time between receiving a request and responding to it) and throughput (speed of delivering data back to a user’s device).

New and existing customers, such as new partners CVC Brasil Operadora e Agência de Viagens SA, will immediately begin to experience the benefits of the network enhancements.

“We required a dependable, agile solution that could adapt to our ever-growing digital market. Throughout a lengthy, rigorous trial process, Verizon Digital Media Services consistently demonstrated its quickness and ease of use with high quality,” said Miguel Alcantara, CIO of CVC Brasil.

The increasing presence of Verizon is timed, as OTT traffic in Latin America is growing significantly while players multiply.

“Our unique, centralised and horizontally scalable PoP architecture helps our content delivery network consistently perform at a superior level,” said Kyle Okamoto, VP of global network, Verizon. “As our presence continues to rapidly grow in South America, we will continue to invest in long-term network infrastructure developments in this market.”
