New online video service Molotov explodes into life in France

Claiming to offer no less than a French revolution, reinventing the daily pleasure of watching television with a new vision of television, the Molotov multiscreen TV service has officially switched on.

Created by JeanDavid Blanc, Pierre Lescure and Jean-Marc Denoual, the free service is available on smartphone, tablet, Apple TV, connected TVs and computers. It is said to offer an intuitive discovery experience with exclusive functionality, while respecting the traditional ecosystem and conventions of television.

At launch Molotov will offer 33 channels (including 25 channels of the French DTT) and ten hours of bookmarks. Users can add options without constraining time commitments and are able to enjoy more channels and services from €3.99 per month. A new selection of TV channels and services will be added over the coming month.

Each show on Molotov has its own poster, with a quick-read timeline indicating how far along each show is in progress. Users choose the programmes they wish to watch, either live or via catch-up. What is said to be an exclusive and never seen before organisation of Molotov’s user interface allows for what the company calls an ‘unprecedented’ 360-degree accessibility to live, catch-up or upcoming programmes.

Users can bookmark programmes of their choice, which will be recorded on the Molotov’s user account, available for playback for as long as they choose. It also alerts users whenever a pre-chosen character — such as actor, director, TV-host, journalist, politician etc — appears on television, whatever the nature of the programme.

Molotov, includes a variety of social media features. What Molotov sees as deep social experience, smarter notifications and alerts, and rich navigation will be announced and deployed in the coming months.
