The Internet of Things is a land of great opportunity for the cybersecurity industry, a research firm has said.
Notably, ABI Research name checked Deutsche Telekom as one of the players that is “pioneering the expansion” of the IoT cybersecurity market.
The Germany-based telco recenrly launched a new security-focused business unit as it looks to make consumers and businesses more secure.
It was the only operator the research firm cited in a list that included Qualcomm, Gemalto, G&D, ARM, Oracle and Intel among other vendors.
The players are coalescing around three distinct areas, according to ABI.
These are hardware (chipset/SoC/microcontroller), firmware/software (embedded OS/RTOS/hypervisor), and applications (platform/cloud/service/analytics) across a wide range of verticals, including automotive, smart home, healthcare, and energy.
The market is expanding but remains fragmented, the research firm added.
Further, standardisation and guideline developments are still in the early stages.
ABI Research Director Michela Menting said: “There is growing interest and requirement for improved levels of security to be designed into products, devices, and networks to protect data, combat fraud, and prevent criminal hacking.
“While there is no one ‘go-to’ company, with so many IoT and security vendors making a stake, the prospects for successfully penetrating the market are high for new players and entrenched leaders alike.
“Promising opportunities, and undeniably challenges, will centre on securing assets, protecting data, and ensuring privacy.”
