Taiwan to have difficulty starting 5G commercial operations by 2020

Chairman Howard Shyr for Taiwan's National Communications Commission (NCC), in response to whether Taiwan can begin commercial operations for 5G mobile communication services in 2020 as planned by a few countries, expressed his pessimistic opinion on the matter.

The difficulty is because Taiwan, although having advantages in production of some components, has actually lagged behind 5G leading countries by more than a half year in development of core equipment and technologies as well as essential intellectual property rights, Shyr explained.

In order to gain the most benefit, Taiwan should choose among groups formed by leading countries for participation in development of 5G technologies, with the choice based on consideration of Taiwan's optimal market niche in 5G development and complete cost-benefit evaluation, Shyr indicated.
