MegaFon Russia, China Unicom extend fiber-optic deal

China Unicom has boosted its access to European telcos and enterprises by expanding a deal with Russia-based carrier MegaFon.

MegaFon has put two new 10GBps data transfer channels into service for the Chinese operator via its 8,700km DREAM fibre optic network.

DREAM, which MegaFon launched in 2013, connects Frankfurt with Hong Kong.

MegaFon opened a 10GBps channel for China Unicom in 2014.

Sally Wang, Executive Vice President of China Unicom (Europe) said: “The DREAM route allows China Unicom to offer its clients in Europe and China a high level of service and to their meet growing capacity demands.”

The Chinese company offers a range of services to its customers, such as managed bandwidth and IP, wholesale voice and ICT solutions.

Vlad Wolfson, MegaFon’s Director of Corporate Business Development, said: “We are pleased that such a major partner as China Unicom has continued to trust MegaFon to resolve its infrastructure challenges through the DREAM project.

“We see good potential for further development in this area.

“According to our calculations, the Europe-Asia channel market is worth more than 3 billion rubles a year in Russia alone.”

Last October, the operator renewed a partnership with Telefónica to provide fixed line and mobile services for Russian clients with a presence abroad.
