Ericsson, Qualcomm, Red start 2.3-2.4 GHz LSA CA pilot

French digital minister Axelle Lemaire launched a pilot using the new Licensed Shared Access (LSA) spectrum solution developed by Ericsson, Qualcomm and French start-up Red Technologies. Under the pilot, spectrum allocated to the French ministry of defence in the 2.3-2.4 GHz band will be shared using Ericsson’s radio access network.

The pilot is underpinned by new technologies from the three companies. Ericsson writes that the success of the French LSA pilot should lead to the release of high volumes of licensed spectrum in France within the next two years, further enabling market growth, competition and innovation.

On a wider scale, the application of LSA to the 2.3-2.4 GHz band across Europe will release enough spectrum to enable innovative 5G services for all EU citizens. The pilot combines Ericsson’s latest carrier aggregation (CA) technology with Red Technologies’ spectrum assessment and management solutions. The state-of-the art LSA user framework was enabled by Qualcomm and applicable to 5G, described as “a powerful world first”.

The system uses Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. In addition to its CA technology, Ericsson is supplying its Radio Dot system for small cells.

The minister said, “This initiative touches the core of the French telecoms industry and has the potential to considerably enhance the consumer mobile experience in France as well as generate significant economic return. The participants involved are demonstrating commendable foresight and inventive strength.”
